The world's oceans – their temperature, chemistry, currents and life – are behind the global systems that make Earth habitable for humanity. Our rain, drinking water, weather, climate, coastline, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe are all ultimately provided and regulated by the seas. Throughout history, oceans and seas have been vital channels of trade and transportation.

Preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution of all types, in particular pollution from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient contamination, by 2025

Sustainable management and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, in order to avoid significant negative impacts, including by strengthening their resilience and taking action to restore them to the health and productivity of the oceans by 2020
