Gender equality is not only a basic human right, but also an essential foundation for peace, prosperity and sustainability in the world. Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes fuels sustainable economies and benefits societies and humanity in general. A record of 143 countries guaranteed equality between men and women in their constitutions as of 2014. However, 52 other countries have not taken this step. In many countries, gender discrimination is still woven into the fabric of legal systems and social norms.
