Investing in infrastructure - transportation, irrigation, energy, information and communication technology - is a vital component of achieving sustainable development and empowering societies in many countries. It has long been recognized that growth in productivity and incomes and improved health and education outcomes require investment in infrastructure. The pace of growth and urbanization also creates a need for new investments in sustainable infrastructure that will help cities to become more adaptable to climate change and can also give impetus to economic growth and social stability. In addition to government financing and official development assistance, private sector financing is being encouraged in support of countries in need of financial, technological and technical support.
